Now here is Gordon's second novel, The Bone Fire.
Homeless people are disappearing from the streets of Edinburgh. Nick Cosgrove’s niece Alison has vanished too, and he’s been asked by his estranged sister to find her. But what is the meaning of his dream a girl hanging from a cross under alien stars, trapped between a bonfire and the restless ocean?
Jason is a 14 year-old boy, adrift in a new school, in a strange city. When he is befriended by his charismatic classmate Lee and the mysterious stranger Owen, his life begins to take off. But both Lee and Owen hide secrets, and Jason has a lot to learn - and Owen is a man on a mission.
As the various strands come together, the solution to these mysteries will challenge all their beliefs about life, and especially - as the story builds to a climax in the desolate, twilight shamanic spirit world – death.
An original fantasy featuring a cast of characters including Merlin the magician and an Arthurian knight newly awoken from slumber under the bald Welsh hills, The Bone Fire is both a compelling mystery story in its own right and a profound meditation on what happens to our souls when we die—
—if, that is, we are fortunate…
The Bone Fire a mystery of the shaman spirit world eBook Gordon Reid
The Bone Fire is one of my favorite novels. It's not the easiest novel to explain - there are so many different layers, so many different story-lines - that it can get complicated to summarize the story. At first, no one notices the people disappearing off the streets of Edinburgh, but when a young college student disappears, a disparate group of people work to find her - and along the way, they find out important things about themselves and each other.
At its most basic, this is a story about what can be found in the darkness between life and death, but in the event, in the reading, it's about much more than that.
Reid manages to make every single character a fully realized person. Even the ones who aren't good people are complete, with entire lives both before and after the book's events. Even the local animals get a word in, from foul-mouthed seagulls to a black labrador with a dry sense of humor.
What makes me love the book so much is the depth of humanity shown. There aren't any characters I can't identify with, which means the twists and turns of the story make me feel as if I'm living through the events with the people on the page.
Ultimately, this book has quickly become one of my comfort reads.

The Bone Fire a mystery of the shaman spirit world eBook Gordon Reid Reviews
I really enjoyed this author's first book, Inquisition of Demons, but when I read this one I realized that the first was just warming up his pen.
This book is mystery and philosophy, time-travel and relationships; coming-of-age, near-death experiences, and much more. An engaging, but not tiring, read. I can't recommend it enough.
I am not sure why I did not care for it. After the first 2 chapters I could not "get into it."
