Nick Dutton’s debut novel, Elliot Cooper’s Work Here Is Done, is set in the world of marketing and takes the reader on a hilarious journey through brainstorms, brands, marketing-speak and life in middle-management.
Elliot Cooper is thirty-five and his life is stuck. Sales have been declining for nineteen months and his marriage is running aground. Then a case of mistaken identity leads to an intriguing job offer and the chance to reboot his career. But that’s when Elliot’s problems really begin.
A woman he should never have drunkenly kissed is stalking him. Crispin, his new boss, starts coming on to him. And the new product he has been hired to launch is a terrible idea that looks certain to fail. With his career and his marriage hanging in the balance, Elliot decides he has to come clean and reveal the truth. It will be the most important presentation of his life.
Elliot Cooper’s Work Here Is Done explores themes of luck, karma, success, failure, ambition, sex and processed meats. It asks the question, how far will someone go to get their life back when fate throws them the wrong bone?

As a one working in marketing I'm always skeptical about books about marketing people or function. But the strength of this one lies in very well developed characters and magnetically engaging story. Through the novel you follow the crisis of a modern middle class sometime turning as an exit-less tragedy. The story is full of everyday micro insights though having the great power of recognition calling for empathy and compassion. The end though happens to be unexpectedly optimistic and life-assertive that seldom offered these days.Product details

Elliot Cooper Work Here Is Done edition by Nick Dutton Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I read this debut novel in about an hour. It held a slightly warped mirror up of the world I work in and it made me smile on every page. The characters were well developed and the story had a surprising end. It does make me think what on earth is going on in the mind of Nick Dutton. Looking forward to novel number 2!
If you enjoyed Hornby, there's a new Nick on the block. Through the lens of a stressed marketing manager, Nick Dutton captures the torments, the vanities and the absurdities of working life today.
Part Dickens, part Bridget Jones, it is a well-observed and hilarious profile of the times we live in with triumphs and insecurities neatly woven together.
The Alsatian moment is a classic of modern literature and totally unforgettable.
Excruciatingly enjoyable from start to finish.
But this book is a great romp in the truest sense of the Tom Sharp / David Nobbs tradition. Eliot Cooper is the sort of media weasel I come across almost daily, so I wasn't sure this book was going to work for me, but that is exactly where it's strength lies; his rollercoaster ride allows you to both empathise and despise him, just like a real person! But more than anything this book is laugh out loud funny and the characters extreme, hilarious and unpredictable. Yet somehow however bonkers it gets, the book never quite descends into farce and manages to entertain from start to grubby finish. Most excellent.
Some people devour books. I don't.
So when I end up racing through a book this quickly I know the author must be doing something right. Nick Dutton does a lot of things right.
Unlike his protagonist, the helpless Elliot Cooper. A sort of Reginald Perrin meets David Brent in the farcical world of marketing. A man who you come to pity but somehow ending up rooting for. And whom in and amongst the courgettes and the sausages actually asks some pertinent questions about the decisions we make and the way we live our lives.
Buy this if you want the kind of book that you start flicking through and end up wondering where the past hour went.
Buy this if you're in any way interested in the ridiculousness of brands and the worlds that create them.
Or perhaps just buy this if you dislike Alsatians.
